It occured to me that we have an odd family. How many people have teenagers who still like read alouds? As a lover of literature, I am so grateful for it.

How cool! How long have you done this?

I've read to my children since they were babies with board books on up. Around 4 or 5 years old, I started simple chapter books with my oldest. The others joined in around that age. We also listen to books on tape in our van sometimes.

When I'm reading at home, I let them each have a cookie sheet with one thing to do with their hands- playdough, legos, markers/paper so they can use their hands while I read. You know I have boys! They are not to interact with their legos or playdough(like crash planes or cars).

I used to wonder if they were really listening, but no more. When I lose my place, and I do quite easily, they tell me the exact words of the sentence I had just read, and beg me for JUST ONE MORE CHAPTER all the time.

that is such a great idea. I think I'll try that out. (I read to my kids, but I like the idea of family reading time a lot.)
